MSU is a two touchdown underdog to Penn State

We knew the Spartans would be underdogs, but a 14 point spread caught many MSU fans by surprise. With Dantonio’s conservative, disciplined attack there is a strong chance that Michigan State can keep it close heading into the final minutes, and maybe even steal a victory.

But 14 points? Even with a 3-point bump to the home team, the Spartans are receiving a lot of respect.

The scary part is this: Vegas knows what it’s doing. They have 11 games worth of background on each team, and decades of experience setting these lines. They’ve probably looked at Penn State’s defense and decided that Javon Ringer will struggle, and when Ringer can’t get it going the Spartans will be hard-pressed to score points. They’re looking at Penn State’s motivation- a Big Ten Championship and a trip to the Rose Bowl and assuming that they’ll get the job done.

And while Michigan State fans may have that initial “bet the house” reaction, I’m sure they’re considering Vegas’s track record and hesitating.

The scarier part is that the line opened at 14 and looks to have moved to 14.5. Michigan State is 7-2 against the spread vs a team with a winning record. Penn State is 7-3-1 in their last 11 games. 14 points looks like a good spread, but I would still take Michigan State with 14.
